Microsoft 2Q24 Earnings, Ranking Big Tech’s 2Q24 Performance

Today's Above Avalon Daily email contains the following story:

  • Microsoft 2Q24 Earnings

  • Ranking Big Tech’s 2Q24 Performance

For today’s update, we will examine Microsoft’s CY2Q24 earnings. This will wrap up our Big Tech 2Q24 earnings reviews. We will then recap Big Tech earnings season by ranking the companies from best to worst reports.

While there are 2Q24 earnings from a few additional companies worth checking out, we will do that after going over several Apple news items.

Just a few hours ago, Apple announced that CFO Luca Maestri will be stepping down as CFO on January 1st, 2025. He will be remaining at Apple to lead Apple’s IT, information security, and real estate portfolios. Kevan Parekh, who has been at Apple for 11 years and is currently VP - Financial Planning and Analysis, will become Apple's new CFO. There is more to say about this tomorrow.

Meta 4Q23 Earnings, Estimating Meta Quest 3 Sales, Ray-Ban Meta and AI

Today's Above Avalon daily update includes the following stories:

  • Meta 4Q23 Earnings

  • Estimating Meta Quest 3 Sales

  • Ray-Ban Meta and AI

There are several Big Tech earnings reports for CY4Q23 worth going over. For those of you who recently became Above Avalon members, my approach to covering Big Tech earnings is twofold:

  • Assess how Apple competitors are doing from a financial/business perspective. This will involve looking at revenue growth metrics, cash flow generation, etc. Given major differences in business models, the metrics will need to be put into proper prospective.

  • Look for developments that shine light on competitive dynamics that stand to impact Apple. This may include everything from advertising to hardware.

Today’s update will be dedicated to Meta, a company that is turning into one of Apple’s most direct competitors.

We wrap up the week with Meta’s 1Q23 earnings. Neil goes over the positives and negatives from the report. Meta continues to experience quite the rebound in expectations. With job cuts and expense reductions at the top of Meta’s considerations, Neil’s attention turned back to a recent article from the Financial Times trying to explain the significant number of job cuts in tech land. Meta Earnings, TikTok Is Hurting Facebook, Apple Is Removing Facebook’s Oxygen

Today's Above Avalon daily update includes the following stories:

  • Meta Earnings

  • TikTok Is Hurting Facebook

  • Apple Is Removing Facebook’s Oxygen

We kick things off with my thoughts on Meta (Facebook) earnings. Management’s conference call was one of the most downbeat calls I’ve come across in tech land in a while. The discussion then turns to how TikTok is hurting Facebook and what that tells us about Facebook’s advertising properties. The update concludes with why I think Apple is removing the oxygen that Facebook needs in order to successfully pivot to new businesses.
